Staff at The Brown Cow, on Ratcliffe Gate, are celebrating after beating the competition to be crowned Mansfield’s best pub.

The Brown Cow has been voted the best in the Chad’s Pub of the Year 2014 competition.

Their beers are so popular they previously won two CAMRA awards, for Pub of the Season Autumn 2014 and The David Brett Award for best pub serving Mild on the Mild Trail 2014.

Part of the pub used to be the cottage home of poet, playwright and publisher Robert Dodsley (1701-1764).

Landlords Chris Johnson and Nicola Thompson said they were delighted with winning the competition,

Nicola said: “It’s fantastic, we had lots of competition, so we’re really pleased.”

When asked why the pub was so popular, she said: “It’s a nice pub, it’s what a traditional pub should be, we just do traditional ale which is what people seem to want.

Over the next year, the pub will host two beer festivals, one in May and one in October.

Raw Brewing Company & Enterprise Inns Re-open the Butchers Arms

Wednesday, 25 September 2013 15:50

The Butchers Arms

Friday 2nd August 2013 saw the Butchers Arms in Woodsetts Nottinghamshire re-open after over 7 months of closure. A partnership between Enterprise Inns and local brewery Raw Brewing Company.

Enterprise Inns worked with Raw Brewery to understand their beer tie requirements that were needed for the consumer offer. This resulted in a part tie, allowing Raw Brewing Company to stock their own cask and kegs ales along with other cask ales from across the country.

Raw Brewing Company was created April 2010 by David Hemstock & Michelle Tuddenham. David & Michelle have created a new pub company Raw Pubs Ltd to manage this new site and other potential sites. The Butchers Arms has familiar features to the other 2 pubs that are linked to Raw. The Arkwright Arms, Duckmanton and White Swan, Chesterfield that are owned and run by John & Kathy Chadwick shareholders in Raw Brewing Company have both featured heavily in the design and the site has been fully refurbished with this in mind.

David Hemstock - Managing Director Raw Brewing Company Ltd & Raw Pubs Ltd “After many discussions with Enterprise trying to find a pub and a flexible beer tie that would fit with our business we came across the Butchers Arms. This site had been closed for several months and was the ideal site for us to work with. We saw the potential of its village location and knew straight away it would work as a traditional cask pub with good home cooked food”. Duncan Marsden (Divisional Director) Enterprise Inns says “We are delighted with the outcome of the Butchers Arms and the commitment that RAW Brewery have shown to this magnificent local pub. The pub is a real asset to the community of Woodsetts and I am sure that it will attract visitors from all over South Yorkshire due to the high quality offer that is now available”.

The selection on the menu includes - 8-10 Real ales on at any one time including the Raw Mucky Duck 3.7% and Courage Bitter 4.0% as the 2 house beers, a regular selection of Raw ales along with other local and national micro breweries ales will feature on the guest pumps. Raw Keg which will include Black Stout 4.1% and Silver Pale 4.7% to start with will be available along with 3 different lagers, continental beers a

nd ciders. A specially selected wines list, bottled craft world beers and bottled real ciders are available along with a home cooked food menu.

The site will be managed by Steven Lefley and Kirstie Swallow, both have experience in real ales pubs and will ensure we deliver high quality with friendly service. Both have many ideas they will be working on over the coming months to make this a real community pub.

Collaboration Brews

This year we have some interesting collaboration brews planned. After the success of previous collaborations more have been arranged to add more variety to the specials. For those not aware of collaboration brews it involves 2 brewers getting together to brew a special beer that aims to fuse distinct brewery styles together. We not only combine our experience in the recipe its a great way to learn new skill in the process too as we all have our own little things we do differently.

So far for 2012 we have

Raw & Steel City - Raw Aussie Steel IPA 6.2% this is the 3rd collaboration with Dave & Gazza from Steel City Brewing Co Sheffield and yet again promises to combine the passion for hops and the desire to see how far we can push it! The same recipe as the 1st Raw Steel IPA but this time with repeated hopping with Australian Stella, Galaxy and Summer hops look out for a powerful bitterness over 135 IBU along with a powerful tropical fruit punch

Raw & Offbeat - Hop Chick 6.1% this is the 1st time Michelle from Offbeat Brewery Crewe and I have worked together on a brew. We have been working together supplying each others beer over the last year and I was impressed with the style and quality of Michelle's beers along with her quirky branding. This brew is a deep orange coloured IPA style beer brewed with German Carared and Melaniodin malts to give it a little more colour and depth. Then using a technique new to me that Michelle has used before we constantly hopped it throughout the boil with Columbus, Citra, Chinook and Crystal hops all from the US. The bulk of them we focused on the last part of the boil so it shouldn't be overly bitter but with a whopping 9.5kg total hop load it should pack a massive amount of flavour from these 4 brilliant hops.

Coming Soon

Raw & Brampton - Josh from Brampton is coming in February to do a Chesterfield Collaboration we already have some very interesting ideas so look out for it on the bars in March

Raw & Muirhouse - This will be the 2nd collaboration we have done and is planned for sometime in March

Raw & Prospect - Planned for April this idea has been floating around ever since we started as we have an obviously strong link with Patsy watch out for a collboration with a twist!

Dark Peak Reserve 2011

Ruberlaris Pale Ale

Friday, 26 August 2011 12:01

Raw and Ruberlaris! Ale and Music always a winning combination. We have teamed up with Ruberlaris and created a 4.2% Pale ale that will been on sale soon throughtout the area. The 1st batch is already sold out and will be available at The All Inn festival 28th August and the Chesterfield Arms (the Bands local!) 3rd September when we have a launch party to celebrate. It will then be available at The Arkwright Arms, The Rutland Sheffield, The Harlequin Sheffield. More outlets will be listed soon and another batch will be brewed soon and then it will go out on general sale and may pop up on the bars at some of the bands future gigs so watch out for it.

The beer has been brewed to support the band on their upcoming tour and CD launch and a percentage of the profits made will go straight back to the band so by drinking it you really are supporting independant music. Watch out for further updates on Facebook and also check out the bands new website where you can find out more about them and where they will be performing.
